Conventions:
- All information in brackets ( [ ] ) is information that is not included in the casebook, but is helpful to a proper understanding of the case.
- All parties are first introduced by name, and subsequently referred to by their role (Plaintiff, Defendant, etc.) in the case, unless clarity requires otherwise.
All of the case briefs on the MacAbe Legal website are divided into several sections:
- The What's Going On? section briefly presents the procedural disposition and basic factual context of the case.
- The Who's Who? section identifies the parties involved in the case. Whether the parties are referred to as Plaintiffs/Defendants or Appellants/Appellees, etc., is generally determined by the terminology used in each particular opinion.
- The Facts section presents the relevant facts of the case.
- The Issue section presents a statement of the pertinent question that the case, as presented in the casebook, attempts to answer.
- The Decision section presents a summary of the court's reasoning in reaching its judgment.
- The Dissent and Consent sections present a brief statement of any dissenting or consenting opinions.
- The Basic Rule section presents the most relevant principle of law given in the case.
- The Terms section lists and defines certain legal terms. While most of the defined terms appear in other sections of the case brief, some terms appear only in the casebook.
